Description

Atik Mosque, also known as the Sava Mosque or Bazaar Mosque, is the oldest and one of the most important Islamic religious monuments in Brčko. Located at the strategic and picturesque confluence of the Brka River and the Sava, on Konačko brdo itself, this mosque has stood for centuries as a guardian of the history of the city that developed around its walls. The name "Atik," which means old in Turkish, confirms its primacy in time, as it was built back in 1650, laying the foundations for the urban development of the oldest neighborhood in Brčko.

Originally built of wood, the mosque was expanded over the centuries to keep pace with the growing number of worshippers, eventually becoming a larger structure that, together with the neighboring mekteb and shops, formed the heart of the old bazaar. Its significance extends beyond the local area, as confirmed by the official declaration of the mosque and its courtyard as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, Atik Mosque is not only a place of prayer, but also an authentic architectural symbol of Brčko that bears witness to the intertwining of cultures, trade, and spirituality on the banks of the Sava.
