Description

Baščaršijska Mosque, also known as the Havadže Durak Mosque, is one of Sarajevo's most beloved religious buildings, located in the heart of Baščaršija in the Stari Grad municipality. It was built as an endowment of Hodža Durak, and a record from 1528 confirms its existence. It is a single-space domed building with an open outer porch covered by small domes and an octagonal carved stone minaret 34.70 meters high.

The interior is breathtaking, with exceptional natural light and acoustics. The mosque courtyard, with a small fountain and tall poplar trees, is a true oasis of peace in the middle of the busy bazaar square. The original wooden dome burned down in the 1697 fire and was replaced by the current one. The mosque was restored in 2021 with support from Turkish foundations and reopened for worship. It has been a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2006.

The mosque and its city

Baščaršijska Mosque is not only a place of worship - it was also an integral part of Sarajevo's economic fabric. Built in the very center of the commercial life of Baščaršija at the time, it also attracted benefactors: many merchants bequeathed their property to support sermons held there, making it a spiritual focal point for the craft and bathhouse quarter of the town as well. This blend of the spiritual and the everyday gives it a special character that every visitor feels when entering its peaceful courtyard in the middle of the bustle of Sarajevo's bazaar.
