National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Description

The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the oldest and most important museum institution in the country, set at Marijin Dvor in Sarajevo. Founded in 1888, in its grand building it keeps a vast cultural and natural treasure of all the peoples of BiH. Designed by Karlo Paržik, it has four neo-Renaissance pavilions with a botanical garden at its centre. It holds departments of archaeology, ethnology and natural sciences, and visitors can walk through the country's history from the earliest times to today.

Its most precious exhibit is the world-famous Sarajevo Haggadah, a lavish Jewish manuscript brought from Spain by the Sephardim. The complex also holds a unique botanical garden with over 3,000 plant species and a valuable collection of stećci tombstones. Today it is a national monument and a must for lovers of history and culture.
