Bijambare Protected Landscape

27 km to city center

Description

Bijambare Protected Landscape is one of the most beloved getaways near Sarajevo, set on the edge of the Nišić Plateau, about 40 kilometres from the city. Across 497 hectares, rolling mountain meadows, dense coniferous forests and limestone ridges alternate to form a unique natural whole. Bijambare is best known for its caves – there are eight, and the Middle Bijambare Cave is developed and lit for visits, about 500 metres long and richly adorned with stalactites, stalagmites and cave draperies.

The area is marked by exceptional biodiversity, with hundreds of plant species and rich wildlife. Besides nature, visitors can enjoy a tourist train, forest and cycling trails, a children's playground, a mountain lodge and an education centre. Thanks to all this, Bijambare is an ideal place for rest, walks and time with nature throughout the year.

Total of 8 caves

Bijambare is home to eight caves, but only the Middle Bijambare Cave is developed and lit for visitors – about 500 metres long and divided into four halls. The fourth, the "concert hall", is especially magical, famed for its remarkable acoustics.

133 ecological communities

Bijambare boasts exceptional biodiversity: as many as 133 distinct biological communities have been recorded in this small area. It is this mosaic of meadows, forests and karst habitats that makes it a unique natural whole.

800 higher plant species

These habitats are built from over 800 species of higher plants, many of them medicinal, edible, aromatic or honey-bearing. Bijambare is thus a living botanical treasury just outside the city.

Nature and Cultural Heritage

Bijambare unites natural and cultural heritage: in the Upper Cave, traces of human presence were found – Stone Age tools and weapons, now kept in the National Museum in Sarajevo.
