Bočac Fortress
Description
Bočac Fortress, also known as Old Town Bočac, is a medieval fortress in the municipality of Mrkonjić Grad. It is located on a rocky hill above the Vrbas River, the dam and the Bočac reservoir, right next to the Banja Luka – Jajce road. Because of its position above the Vrbas Canyon, the fortress played an important strategic role in controlling the river valley and communications through this part of Krajina. Sources state that it was part of a chain of medieval defensive points in the Vrbas valley, together with fortifications such as Zvečaj, Greben and Jajce.
Guardian over the Vrbas
Bočac Fortress was not an isolated structure — it was part of a chain. Between Banja Luka and Jajce, in the Vrbas canyon, strategic fortifications stood one after another like a line of sentries: Vrbaški Grad, Zvečaj, Greben, Bočac, Jajce. Each controlled a section of the valley, and Bočac was responsible for the river crossing. The donjon with its tower on the cliff, with cannons aimed at the water, was exactly what its name suggested — the last argument of defense. Walls 3.5 meters thick and the rocky base beneath its feet gave the fortress the character it retained even after the Ottoman conquest, all the way into the 19th century.
