Bočac Lake
Description
Bočac Lake is a reservoir on the Vrbas River, located between Banja Luka and Mrkonjić Grad, in the area of the Vrbas Canyon and the settlement of Bočac. It was created by the construction of the Bočac hydroelectric power plant and today is an interesting nature and recreation spot for day trips, fishing, driving along the canyon and landscape photography. Although it is not a classic arranged bathing area like Balkana, its value lies in the peaceful setting, the water surface, the surrounding hills and its proximity to the important Banja Luka – Jajce road.
The canyon and the water
Bočac Lake was not formed on flat terrain — it filled one of the most attractive canyons of the Vrbas River, between the slopes of the Čemernica and Manjača mountains. The submerged karst landscape and the cold, clear water of the Vrbas created a special underwater ecosystem that supports an exceptionally rich fish population.
The water is cold and clear, and the depth varies dramatically: just 15 meters at the mouth of the Ugar River, but up to 60 meters near the dam itself. This range of depths, along with the inaccessible rocky shores, gives the lake a wild character that attracts people precisely because it is not developed or fenced off
Fishing and eco-tourism
Bočac Lake has long been considered one of the richest fishing spots in Republika Srpska. Zander, carp, and trout are the most common, but barbel, huchen, roach, and grayling also live in the depths of the lake — a diversity rarely found in a single reservoir.
The eco center by the lake is dedicated to protecting the waters of Bočac and the Vrbas River, while the Eco-Fishing Camp offers accommodation and landscaped shores for visitors who want to stay longer. The lake is only 15 kilometers from Mrkonjić Grad, making it an ideal starting point for a day trip or a multi-day stay in nature.
