The Spring of the Buna

Natural spring in Blagaj

11.4 km to the city center

Description

The Spring of the Buna in Blagaj is one of the most beautiful and most powerful karst springs in Europe, located just 12 kilometers from Mostar. The Buna River emerges from the depths of a cave at the foot of a 200-meter-high karst cliff, releasing up to 40 cubic meters of crystal clear emerald water per second — a breathtaking sight that leaves no one indifferent. Beside the spring stands the Blagaj Tekke, a 16th century dervish house, a perfect blend of Ottoman architecture and Herzegovinian tradition.

Legend has it that at this very spot the dervish Salih defeated a dragon that lived in the cave, and as a reward received the tekke from Duke Stjepan. By boat you can enter the cave itself and experience the spring from within, and along the river restaurants await with fresh trout and Herzegovinian specialties. The water temperature is a constant 9°C throughout the year.
