Sarajevo City Hall
Description
Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica) is the most opulent building of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo and one of the city's most recognisable symbols. It stands by the Miljacka, near Baščaršija, built in the pseudo-Moorish style blending Eastern and Western influences. Designed by the architect Alexander Wittek, it was solemnly opened on 20 April 1896. It first served the city administration, then after the Second World War became the National and University Library of BiH.
On the night of 25–26 August 1992, the City Hall burned down together with its vast library – one of the heaviest losses for the country's culture. Reconstruction to the original documentation took almost two decades, and the restored City Hall reopened on 9 May 2014. Today it shines once more and is used for ceremonial and cultural occasions, remaining the pride of Sarajevo.
