Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Description
The Catholic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Brčko is a superb example of sacred architecture, built in 1933 to a design by the renowned Karlo Paržik, one of the most important architects of Bosnian-Herzegovinian historicism. This three-nave basilica stands out as the most lavishly decorated of Paržik’s buildings from that period, with a façade rich in sculptural detail, a striking clock tower and an elegant marble rosette above the entrance.
The interior of the church hides a true artistic treasure, including the frescoes of Alberto Gruber, who immortalised biblical scenes on the ceiling using his own likeness to depict Christ, as well as the preserved sculptures of Josip Kaplan. With its basilica layout, semicircular apse and distinctive yellow-and-white stained glass through which the light is refracted, this church is not only a place of worship, but also an invaluable cultural and historical monument that bears witness to Brčko’s architectural and spiritual rise between the two world wars.
