Bukvara Mosque
Description
Set in the peaceful embrace of the neighborhood after which it is named, the Bukvara Mosque is one of the oldest and most authentic witnesses to Gradačac’s past. Built in the mid-19th century, around 1847, this mosque was the work of the local people of Bukva neighborhood. It is especially recognizable for its wooden minaret, which at the time of construction was common, but today is a rare and precious architectural detail that gives it warmth and an authentic appearance.
The mosque courtyard hides a historical treasure in the form of old nišans, among which the richly decorated sarcophagus of Emin-beg Alajbegović stands out in particular. These monuments confirm the deep connection of the neighborhood with the Alajbegović family, who, according to tradition, are said to trace their roots directly to the famous Gradaščević family. Surnames carved in stone, such as Alajbegović, who were Bosnian nobles, speak of a noble lineage that chose this very place for its eternal rest.
