Description

Kukavičko Lake is a natural mountain lake located about 8 km from the center of Kupres, below the southern slopes of Mount Stožer, at an altitude of 1,200–1,260 m. It was formed by rainwater collecting in a natural depression in the terrain, which makes it geomorphologically unique. It is about 250 m long, about 130 m wide, and has a maximum depth of around 10–13 m. The lake is the source of the Milač River, which flows into the Šujica and then into Buško Lake.

Trout and river crayfish live in the lake, and the rich ecosystem around it includes mountain flora, wildflowers, and diverse fauna. In summer, it is used for swimming and camping, and the lake and surrounding area are maintained by USR Pastrva Kupres. It has been declared a nature park. According to legend, it was formed from the tears of a golden-haired fairy who mourned her missing knight. Access by car is easy: Kupres roundabout → Begovo selo → Goravci → Botun → Nature Park sign; 5 minutes on foot from the parking area.

Legend of the golden-haired fairy

Kukavičko Lake comes not only with clear water and mountain peace — it also comes with a legend. It is said that the lake was formed from the tears of a beautiful golden-haired fairy who was heartbroken when her knight vanished without a trace.

Her tears, falling onto the mountain meadows below Stožer, filled a natural hollow and created a heart-shaped lake. Legend or not, the shape of the lake is real, and so is the feeling it leaves behind. Many who come for the natural beauty stay for the story too, because few lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina have such a strong visual identity and emotional pull.
