Maglić Mountain
Description
Maglić is the highest mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most impressive Dinaric peaks, on the border with Montenegro, some twenty kilometres south-west of Foča, within Sutjeska National Park. Its summit on the Bosnian side rises to 2,386 metres, while the neighbouring Veliki Vitao, on the Montenegrin side, reaches 2,396 metres. Built of ancient rock and limestone, it still shows traces of former glaciers.
Its lower slopes are covered with dense beech and coniferous forests, while above the tree line stretch high pastures, ridges and peaks. Maglić also hides real natural treasures: on its slopes lies Perućica, one of the last primeval forests in Europe, and the famous Trnovačko Lake, set in a magnificent glacial cirque at 1,517 metres. Rich in springs and untouched wilderness, this mighty mountain is a real challenge and reward for experienced hikers.
