Masna Luka
Description
Masna Luka rightly bears the title of the heart of Blidinje Nature Park, located at the foot of the towering Čvrsnica, which, with its height and steep cliffs, protects the area and feeds it with numerous sources of drinking water. This landscape, stretching between marshy meadows and dense forests of the endemic munika pine, offers scenes whose beauty surpasses even film frames. The starting point for exploration is St. Elijah’s Church, from where the path leads to the lowest points of the field, past the refreshing Jasle spring, all the way to the lake whose water level follows the rhythm of the seasons. A walk through Masna Luka is a sensory experience filled with the murmur of streams and the scent of mountain herbs, while viewpoints above the lake offer a complete view of this mountain paradise.
The area is crisscrossed with trails suitable for both casual walkers and serious hikers. After descending to the marshy areas, the trail follows streams winding through meadows, creating an idyllic atmosphere for rest.
A mosaic of nature in the palm of your hand
Masna Luka is not a typical mountain area – it is a mosaic of water, forests, and silence rarely found at this altitude. It is rich in underground and surface water because Čvrsnica abounds in springs: the Jasle spring, known to hikers as the perfect starting point, feeds the small lake and marsh below, while a network of streams murmurs down toward the lower areas.
Along the streams and meadows stretches a forest of endemic munika pine – a rare and medicinal species whose pollen helps with respiratory diseases, and from which the distinctive pine honey is made. Together with Boričevac, Masna Luka forms the world’s largest reserve of this exceptional species.
One of the most beautiful easy hikes
The circular walk around Masna Luka is one of the most beautiful easy hikes in Blidinje Nature Park. It starts at the Church of St. Elijah the Thunderer, descends to the lowest, marshy parts of Luka where the Jasle spring is located, continues along the stream through munika pine forests to the lake, whose size changes depending on the season. Above the lake, a viewpoint offers a view of all of Masna Luka and Čvrsnica. The return route goes through Badnje with an uninterrupted view of the cliffs of Čvrsnica.
For rest and a meal at the end of the tour, the Masna Luka Mountain Lodge awaits with deep shade in front of the entrance. The Church of St. Elijah deserves special attention: two-ton bronze doors, mosaics in red stone, stained glass, and galleries with mountain and sacred motifs are the work of local Herzegovinian artists.
