Tunel spasa

6.8 km to the city center

Description

The Tunnel of Hope, also known as Tunnel D-B, is one of Sarajevo's most striking memorial complexes and is today managed by the Sarajevo Memorial Centre. The tunnel was dug in 1993 beneath the runway of Sarajevo's airport to link the Dobrinja and Butmir neighbourhoods – hence the name D-B. It is a remarkable feat of engineering: about 785 metres long, only around a metre wide and a metre and a half high, it was dug by hand, with picks and shovels, by some 300 people.

Rails and small carts were later laid through it to ease transport. Today the family house that served as its entrance has been turned into a museum, where visitors can walk a preserved section of the tunnel and see many authentic exhibits, photographs and objects from the period. The Tunnel of Hope is one of the most visited sites in the city and a fixture on almost every guided tour of Sarajevo.
