Description

The Central Memorial Ossuary to the Fallen Participants of the National Liberation War in Lukavac is a monumental symbol of courage and remembrance, ceremonially opened on September 13, 1962, on the city’s Liberation Day. Located in the immediate vicinity of the historic Old Railway Station building, this complex was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019. The monument is harmoniously integrated into a park setting, and access is via a platform in the shape of four trapezoids, giving the entire setting strong symbolic and artistic value.

In the ossuary rest 267 fighters from the Lukavac area, whose names are carved into marble plaques, while the central part is dominated by a tall rhombus-shaped obelisk inspired by motifs from the Bosnian carpet. At the very top stands a bronze sculpture of a girl, the work of the renowned Tuzla sculptor Dragiša Trifković, symbolizing victory. Among the people of Lukavac, there is a belief that the figure represents Marija Macan, a fourteen-year-old heroine who tragically died in 1943. Thanks to regular maintenance and its first-category protection status, this monument remains a key point of the city’s historical identity and a place to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for its freedom.
