Description

In the very heart of Bijeljina, on the square that proudly bears his name, stands the monument to King Peter I Karađorđević, a true symbol of the city and guardian of its turbulent history. The idea of erecting this monumental structure was born immediately after the end of the First World War, with the intention of honoring the King and urbanizing the central city space in front of the municipal administration building. The original masterpiece by Zagreb sculptor Rudolf Valdec was unveiled in 1937, but its fate was tragic - during the Nazi occupation in 1941, the statue was toppled and destroyed, and all trace of the original was then lost.

The present monument was erected on November 8, 1993. This impressive composition depicts a king draped in a cloak on a rearing horse, thrusting a sword into a three-headed beast. That beast carries deep symbolism, representing the three great empires defeated in the Great War. As a blend of artistic value and historical defiance, the monument dominates the square and is an essential stop for every visitor who wants to feel the spirit of Bijeljina and understand its cultural identity.
