Description

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Čaršijska Mosque, is the oldest and most important Islamic religious building in Zenica. Its history is fascinating – while the oldest record found at the Sejmenska Mosque suggests that it already existed in 1506, its present appearance is the result of a major reconstruction after the devastating flood of 1869. This monumental project was financed almost entirely by Ali-beg Kukavica, leaving the city with a building that is now protected by the state as a national monument.

The mosque is recognizable for its spacious prayer area and 31-meter-high stone minaret. Unlike many domed mosques, the Čaršijska Mosque has a distinctive flat wooden ceiling inside, while the exterior is decorated with a classic four-sided roof.

What makes this site special is the entire complex surrounding it: Stone madrasa: A ground-floor building with an open courtyard (atrium) in the center, where a stone fountain stands. The wooden porch resting on 24 columns gives this space a special oriental charm. Harem and fountain: Around the mosque there is a small harem with old nišans (tombstones) and an octagonal fountain from 1927, which still serves worshippers and passersby today.
