Tvrdoš Monastery
Description
Tvrdoš Monastery is one of the oldest spiritual sites in Herzegovina, on the bank of the Trebišnjica, five kilometres from Trebinje. It was raised on the foundations of a 4th-century church, which makes it the oldest living monastery in the region. Its church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, and a special feature is the glass floor – a window into the past revealing the foundations of the ancient church. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it took its present form in the 20th century.
Tvrdoš is closely tied to Saint Basil of Ostrog, who took his monastic vows here. Besides its rich spiritual and cultural heritage, the monastery is widely known today for its winery: the monks tend vineyards and keep a winemaking tradition over five centuries old in their stone cellars. Set in the calm Herzegovinian landscape, Tvrdoš unites history, faith and fine wine.
