Description

Tvrtkovac Mountain is located not far from Zenica, and its highest peak reaches 1,304 m above sea level. It is named after King Tvrtko I Kotromanić, who ruled from Bobovac near Kakanj, next to Seoce. At the foot of the mountain lies the village of Pepelari, beside which flows the Pepelarska River, as well as the Zdravstveni radnici Mountain Lodge at 704 m above sea level, at the edge of a conifer forest. The Tvrtkovac Mountaineering Society was founded on 17 February 1969, and they placed the lodge in a former forest house above Pepelari.

The hike to the summit starts from Ponijeri along the Markovac stream, and from the crossroads below Ruda glava the visitor can choose between the northern ridge that leads to Tvrtkovac or the gentler, longer trail from the south via Seoce. There is a water spring below the summit. The trail is not technically demanding and there is no mine danger.

The mountain of King Tvrtko

Few mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina carry such a strong historical legacy in their name. Tvrtkovac was named after Tvrtko I Kotromanić, the first Bosnian king, who ruled from Bobovac near Kakanj — just a step away from Seoce at the foot of this mountain. The mountain's strategic position has not changed over the centuries: what was a fortress in Tvrtko's time is, in today's hiking descriptions, a hill with a view worth every meter of the climb.

Two faces of Tvrtkovac

Tvrtkovac does not offer just one trail — it offers a choice. From the crossroads below Ruda glava, hikers can take the northern ridge, which leads directly to the summit with a beautiful view of the surrounding area, or the longer, gentler route from Seoce, which reaches the peak from the south. Both trails pass through dense forests that provide shade and shelter from the sun in summer, and just below the summit there is a spring of fresh water — a detail that makes every hiking trip feel more complete. There are no technical difficulties, and there is no mine danger.
