Vjetrenica Cave

4.4 km to city center

Description

Known since ancient times, this is the largest and most well-known cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the most important global biodiversity hotspots for cave fauna, particularly underground aquatic organisms. This impressive natural attraction is known for its long underground channels, rich cave decorations, and unique ecosystem.

What makes Vjetrenica particularly special are the powerful air currents after which it was named, as well as the large number of endemic species living in its interior, including rare cave organisms. The interior is adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes, and rivers, creating an almost surreal spectacle.

Due to its natural and scientific value, Vjetrenica is a protected area and one of the most important speleological sites in the region. A visit to the cave provides a unique experience of exploring the underground world and an encounter with the unspoiled nature of Herzegovina.
