Zelengora Mountain

23.7 km to the city center

Description

Zelengora is a vast mountain massif in south-eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, part of Sutjeska National Park, spreading across three municipalities – Gacko, Kalinovik and Foča. It is a great plateau studded with peaks, among them Bregoč (2,015 m) and Lelija (2,032 m), cut through by the deep canyons of the Hrčavka, the Jabušnica and the Sutjeska.

Zelengora's greatest treasures are its eight glacial lakes, the so-called "mountain eyes", such as Orlovačko, Štirinsko and the Donje and Gornje Bare lakes. The mountain teems with life – it counts over 2,600 plant species and endemics, and is home to one of the most vital populations of bears, wolves and chamois in Europe. Alongside its natural beauty, Zelengora carries a strong historical mark as the scene of the final battles of the Battle of the Sutjeska in 1943. Today it is a paradise for hikers and lovers of unspoilt nature and peace.
