St. Elijah Church
Description
The Church of Saint Elijah in Zenica is not only a place of worship, but also one of the city’s most important symbols, and together with the parish office and the surrounding park it has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built between 1909 and 1910, the present church replaced the original building from 1870. The design signature of one of the most famous architects of the time, Josip Vancaš, is visible in the dominance of Secession-style architectural forms, which give the church its distinctive elegance and historical importance.
The church interior contains items of great artistic and historical value: Main altar: Dating from 1837, decorated with a relief of Saint Elijah (the patron saint of Bosnia) and sculptures of Saint Barbara and Saint Florian.
The church has an organ with eight registers, donated in 1933 by engineer Faulend and built by the renowned Zagreb company Heferer.
Over the past decade, the parish office has become home to a valuable collection of contemporary fine art, which is regularly expanded.
