Rakitnica Canyon
Description
The Rakitnica Canyon is one of the best-kept secrets of Bosnia and Herzegovina – a deep cleft where nature still rules. Set south-east of Sarajevo, between the mighty mountains of Bjelašnica and Visočica, the canyon was carved by the Rakitnica, a tributary of the Neretva. It runs twenty-six kilometres, and its cliffs rise over eight hundred metres in places, among the deepest and best-preserved in Europe.
Along it follow rapids, waterfalls and clear turquoise pools, and the water is so pure it can be drunk. It shelters bears, wolves and chamois and dozens of endemic species. It is not easy to reach: no paved roads or signs, and demanding trails, so a local guide is recommended. The finest views open from the rim, along the path linking the traditional mountain villages of Umoljani and Lukomir. For those seeking wild, untouched nature far from the crowds, Rakitnica is a real reward.
