Description

Prenj is one of the most beautiful, yet most rugged mountains in BiH, in the heart of the Dinarides in northern Herzegovina. For its sharp, jagged ridges and magnificent views it is often called the Herzegovinian Himalayas. The massif lies in a great arc of the Neretva, from Glavatičevo near Konjic to Bijelo Polje near Mostar, with Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar at its foot.

Its highest peak, Zelena Glava, rises above 2,100 metres, and Prenj has around ten peaks over two thousand metres. Traces of former glaciers show in broad cirques and steep faces dropping as much as eight hundred metres towards the Neretva canyon. The climate here is capricious: the clash of Mediterranean and continental air masses brings sudden changes of weather, so Prenj demands experience and caution. To those who conquer it, it repays with views stretching all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Difficulty: demanding, for experienced hikers
Location: northern Herzegovina, among Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar
Highest peak: Zelena Glava, over 2,100 m
Access: from Konjic, Jablanica or Mostar (with a guide)

A Paradise for Hikers

Prenj is a paradise for hikers, climbers and lovers of the wild. The most popular goal is the climb to Zelena Glava, reached by trails from Jablanica, Ruišta and Boračko Lake. There are also chances for climbing, camping under the stars and watching birds and the rich wildlife.

For Experienced Hikers Only

Prenj is a demanding and unpredictable mountain, so the climb is recommended only for experienced hikers, ideally with a guide. The weather changes suddenly here, which has caused accidents in the past, so good gear, water supplies and checking the forecast are essential. The main approaches lead from Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar, mostly through canyons and forest roads.

Nature & landscape

Niže padine prekrivaju guste bukove i borove šume, a više predjele klekovina i goli krš.

How Did Prenj Get Its Name?

Prenj is believed to take its name from Perun, the supreme thunder god of the ancient Slavs, while its Latin name was Mons Daversus. For its rugged beauty and stunning views it has been nicknamed the "Herzegovinian Himalayas". Interestingly, the recorded heights of its peaks vary from map to map.
