House of Mare Popović
Description
The last guardian of the memory of the former neighborhoods of Gračanica is the House of Mara Popović, the only remaining example of the most developed type of traditional Bosnian house in this city. Located in the Varoš neighborhood and built in the second half of the 19th century, this old čardaklija represents a specific architectural type that experts call an "agha’s house in the countryside."
Its appearance, marked by an authentic blend of functionality and traditional aesthetics, sets it apart from the usual urban čardaklija houses and offers a rare insight into the way of life and building traditions of past centuries. As a protected national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the House of Mara Popović is not only a tourist attraction, but a precious cultural monument that stands defiantly as a symbol of civic tradition and the cultural diversity of Gračanica.
