Orthodox Church of St. Procopius
Description
The Church of Saint Procopius the Great Martyr is a quiet but precious guardian of one of the most valuable icon collections in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was built in 1857 on the southern edge of Visoko, in the suburb of Podvisoki along the main road toward Kiseljak.
This single-nave Orthodox church of the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosnia hides a treasure within its walls — a collection of icons by Byzantine, Cretan, Russian and Venetian masters, some as much as six centuries old.
Renovated several times, most recently in the period 2019–2024 with the support of local authorities and businesspeople, the church today shines with a restored façade and a renovated interior. Declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004 together with its icon collection, the Church of St. Procopius is not just a place of worship — it is a living museum of sacred art and proof that culture knows no borders, even in the hardest times.
