Description

Travnik is the only city in Bosnia and Herzegovina that can boast two clock towers, and the one located next to the Hadži Ali-beg Mosque in Gornja Čaršija is an essential part of the city panorama. Although the exact time of its construction is lost in the mists of history, it is believed that it was built in the 18th century by the famous vizier Mehmed Pasha Kukavica. Over the centuries, this tower survived fires and numerous trials, and its present recognizable appearance is due to the restoration carried out in 1817. Then, thanks to Vizier Sulejman Pasha Skopljak, it received a distinctive four-sided wooden roof on posts and a clock mechanism with four dials and a bell that still precisely marks the hours and quarters, reminding passersby of times gone by.

Due to its architectural and historical value, this clock tower has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is not only a timekeeper, but also a guardian of tradition which, together with its "twin" in the Old Town, makes Travnik a unique place where oriental charm can be felt at every step. For all lovers of antiquity, the view of the tower as the sun rises over Gornja Čaršija is one of the most beautiful sights this vizier's town has to offer.
