Description

In the heart of the village of Tuholj near Kladanj lies the Old Wooden Mosque, a true national monument that bears witness to the genius of vernacular architecture from the late 18th century. This architectural gem, built entirely from natural materials, is one of the best-preserved examples of wooden sacred architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Recognizable by its steep four-sided roof and slender wooden minaret rising directly from the roof structure, the mosque radiates modesty and peace, while its harem preserves more than a hundred nišans, the oldest dating back to 1804. The mosque’s interior is adorned with precious movable heritage in the form of handwoven wool kilims, and the special custom of holding the first Friday prayer of the month keeps its spiritual thread alive to this day. A visit to Tuholj offers a rare journey into the past, where the scent of old wood and the silence of the centuries-old cemetery blend into a unique story of tradition that defies time.
