Prijevor Viewpoint
Description
The Prijevor plateau is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Sutjeska National Park, at 1,668 metres, at the foot of Maglić – the highest mountain in BiH. Ringed by giants over two thousand metres – Maglić, Volujak, Snježnica and the Zelengora heights – and backed by the virgin forest of Perućica, Prijevor gives the feeling of standing in the middle of an untouched continent. I
It is the departure point for the park's leading destinations: the Maglić summit and Trnovačko Lake can each be reached in under three hours. On the plateau lives one of the last traditional highland settlements in the region, where hosts offer cheese and kajmak, and guests can rent mountain huts for a longer stay. The plateau is rich in medicinal herbs, endemic wildflowers and blueberries, and a spring of ice-cold water flows at its centre. A tall observation tower offers a panorama well worth every climb.
Highland life
On the Prijevor plateau one of the last traditional highland settlements in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been preserved. In summer, mountain farmers live here and prepare cheese and kajmak in sheepskin bags in an old, almost forgotten way. Visitors can try these traditional crafts, and hosts are happy to offer a glass of homemade brandy and fresh milk. For those who want more than a day visit, the huts can be rented for a multi-day stay.
Trails & viewpoint
Prijevor is a natural starting point for the most attractive destinations in Sutjeska National Park. From here one trail leads to the summit of Maglić, reached in under three hours, and another to Trnovačko Lake, one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Balkans. On the plateau itself stands a tall observation tower from which a single glance takes in the full ring of mountains – Maglić, Volujak, Snježnica and Zelengora – while the edges of the Perućica virgin forest can be seen in the distance.
