Basic Information
Višegrad is located in the far east of Republika Srpska, at the confluence of the Rzav and Drina rivers. The town gained worldwide recognition thanks to its historic stone bridge built in 1571, an endowment of Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović, which inspired Ivo Andrić’s famous novel The Bridge on the Drina. Today, the town is enriched by Andrićgrad (Stone Town), a cultural complex that combines Renaissance, Byzantine, and Ottoman architectural styles. Beyond its historic center, Višegrad offers a unique opportunity to cruise through one of the deepest river canyons in Europe. Nearby, visitors can also find the healing spa “Vilina Vlas,” known for the specific radioactivity of its thermal waters, believed to have beneficial health effects.
