Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge
Description
The most famous attraction in Višegrad, near the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. One of the most important monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The bridge was built between 1571 and 1577 by order of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović at the place where the road connected Bosnia with Constantinople over the Drina River.
It was designed by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is inseparably linked to Ivo Andrić's novel The Bridge on the Drina. For every visitor to Višegrad, this is the first and most important stop on the tour. The bridge has eleven arches with a gentle rise toward the center and a descending ramp on the left bank. Its total length is 179.5 m, the height above normal water level is 15.40 m, and the width is 6.30 m.
