Eminagića konak
Description
Eminagića konak is the finest example of bey-style residential architecture in Tešanj — an elegant three-story building from the first half of the 19th century that once served as the home of one of Tešanj's wealthiest families of landowners and merchants. The magaza, ground floor, and luxuriously furnished upper floor with the bey's room, divanhana, and a direct view of Gradina and the old bazaar tell the story of a life that combined practicality and luxury. Restored in 2011 and declared a national monument of BiH, the konak now lives on as a museum — and a fun fact for film lovers: the legendary TV series "Tale" was filmed right here in 1979.
A house made for people
Eminagića konak is not just an old house — it is a preserved way of life. The Eminagić family built it in the mid-19th century according to principles that were then the peak of Bosnian residential architecture: the ground floor functional and adapted to everyday life, the upper floor luxurious and measured for rest and hospitality. Every room had its purpose, from the magaza where food was kept in natural coolness, to the divanhana upstairs where people sat, talked, and received guests.
Dimaluk: the heart of the Bosnian house
At the center of the ground floor stands the dimaluk — a spacious kitchen with an open hearth whose smoke rose straight up to the roof and exited through six openings, the so-called badži. This system, which today sounds like ecological architecture, was part of everyday life for generations of the Eminagić family. Without a chimney in the modern sense, without complicated infrastructure — just fire, wood, stone, and a carefully designed space that warmed the house and fed the family at the same time.
The bey's room
On the southwest side of the upper floor, overlooking Tešanj's Gradina and the old bazaar, is the bey's room — the most beautiful corner of the konak. The rosette on the ceiling, the seating bench along the wall, the rug on the floor, the low tables, and the brazier — everything here has remained almost exactly as it was when the father and mother of the Eminagić family spent their free time here. Even today, this room is the most striking experience of the konak, a place where the past does not need to be imagined because it is still here.
The konak today
After the family left the konak in the 1970s and the building fell into neglect, the Municipality of Tešanj bought it, restored it with support from the European Union and the Federation of BiH, and opened it as a museum in 2011. Today, Eminagića konak is an annex of the Tešanj Museum and welcomes between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors each year, half of them foreign tourists from Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Scandinavian countries. In the summer months, cultural events are held in the konak, and visitors can enjoy Bosnian coffee and buy souvenirs featuring motifs from the Tešanj area.
