Tešanj
Basic Information
Tešanj is a town that has guarded the same rocky hill for three millennia, and every conqueror who tried to change that met resistance. Tešanj Fortress, Gradina, one of the three largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina with an area of 5,600 m², was a stronghold of the Illyrians, Romans, Bosnian rulers, and Ottomans, and in 1697 it was the only fortress to withstand the fierce army of Eugene of Savoy — the Austrian army withdrew after three days of unsuccessful attacks. Today, visitors to the fortress towers can see the Tešanj Museum with the exhibition "Tešanj Through the Centuries" and the original flag from the Battle of Mohács in 1526 — a valuable exhibit that attracts tourists from all over Europe, especially from Turkey. Alongside the fortress, the town is dominated by the 17th-century Clock Tower — one of only four in Bosnia and Herzegovina that still keeps accurate time, and its clock mechanism brought from Vienna in 1890 has never failed. The Gazi Ferhad-beg Mosque from 1564, Eminagić House, and mineral springs of world-class quality complete the picture of a town that combines deep history with authentic Bosnian life.
