Description

Mount Konjuh is located in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina and is one of the most important natural resources of Tuzla Canton. The 30-kilometre horseshoe-shaped ridge, with its highest peak Veliki Konjuh (1326–1328 m), dominates the area between the Krivaja, Spreča and Drinjača rivers.

The Protected Landscape Konjuh covers more than 8,000 hectares in three protection zones. The mountain is covered with dense forests of conifers, beech and maple, and the legally protected medicinal plant gentian also grows on the rocky ridges. Mali Konjuh (1191 m) draws attention with its wide grassy plateaus and umbrella-shaped pines, while from Varda (791 m) visitors witness the sight of fog filling the Spreča Valley. The Zidine shelter (1180 m) is an iconic location with a natural amphitheatre and a panorama of the northwestern part of the mountain. The starting point for most tours is the Mačkovac picnic area in Banovići or the Zobik mountain lodge (560 m).

Mountain Character

Konjuh is a mountain that surprises everyone who comes for the first time. Its horseshoe-shaped ridge, unusual for the Dinaric Alps, opens up views in every direction: on a clear day, the snow-covered peaks of Bjelašnica, Treskavica, Vranica and Vlašić can be seen from the summit. Mali Konjuh, with pine trees with flat crowns on a grassy plateau, looks as if someone deliberately decorated it for a holiday.

From Varda, a low peak that is easy to climb, you can watch the fog filling the Spreča Valley like the ancient Pannonian Sea. Evergreen forests along the ridges and abundant rainfall created by the clash of continental and mountain climates give Konjuh a level of biodiversity unmatched anywhere else in this part of Bosnia.
