Clock tower

207 m to the city centre

Description

The clock tower in Tešanj is a quiet guardian of time that has been ticking continuously since the 17th century — standing 18.5 metres tall, it is one of only four clock towers in Bosnia and Herzegovina that still show the correct time today. Until 1891, it kept lunar "a la turca" time, when Fehim-beg Smailbegović from Tešanj sent a gift to the town from Vienna — a new clock that switched to Central European time and has never failed since. The clock is wound every day by hand, just as it was more than a century ago.
